Applications
Side City is a digital production environment with multiple areas of expertise and that uses an approach that is as unique as its location in historic Old Montreal. We consider the site on which creations are developed and marketed, quality of life and working conditions to be as important as the excellence of our services.
Our production teams include outstanding professionals who work in harmony. They must be efficient and meticulous in order to meet the company’s high quality standards. Our specialists are recruited according to a painstaking hiring process; to ensure synergy and multidisciplinarity, only those most likely to integrate well with our existing team are selected.
Working at Side City studios is widely considered a privilege. Our artists are known as the best, as are their elaborate creations. They combine artistic talent and technical expertise in their often varying fields: design, scripting, illustration, graphics, 3D, editing and animation. Our project managers, coordinators, team leaders, artistic directors and technical directors, programmers and integrators also share these qualities.
Mission
Our work methods are based on two strengths: First, we maintain close relationships with our clients, which, we’ve noticed, has fostered loyalty. The method is foolproof: To maintain our clients’ trust in us, we must provide them with quality productions that meet their expectations on all counts. But the best proof of the effect of our approach is the reactions(Wow!) to our presentations and our seamless processes to complete a production. Our clients can focus on their own tasks because they feel supported by a highly motivated team.
Second, we make full use of our knowledge and experience by combining our expertise in the fields of 3D, video games, HD production and new media. Not only do we respond to the advances in technology in the various sectors of the industry that could benefit from them, but we also use our curiosity and passion to discover new fields of application. This is what we refer to as our technological creativity. The more we work closely on projects with our partner clients, the more we jointly develop new fields of expertise that improve and broaden our range of services.
This partnership with clients has enabled us to break into various markets:
Games of chance for lottery corporations and casinos
High-definition (HD) interactive video and television production
Digital scenography
Digital cinema
Digital signage
Video games on console, PC or online
Games and applications for the iPhone
Related online products
Methodology
Our production methodology is based on many years of experience that have enabled us to develop trusted and flexible work processes. Ongoing advances in technology require that we frequently adjust our work processes and spur new needs for our clients to create new products. We adapt quickly to meet their demands and offer them solutions.
We are fully aware of the advantages of having our own management tools in order to keep pace with advances in technology. Our production processes are managed entirely with software created and maintained by our developers.
Integration tools simplify our artists’ work by minimizing repetitive movements and errors, thereby enabling them to focus on the creative aspects of their jobs.
Management tools enable more consistent production monitoring on several levels: planning, job descriptions and assignments, deadlines, work progress, scripting and technical editing of projects, project management and validation. Since all communication and information is grouped together in one location, it is can easily be accessed by our clients at any time. Access is fully secured using personal accounts and permissions.
Production follow-up takes place in real time. A product is therefore monitored several times a day, from its design to its completion, as are its components, from validation to delivery. This increases the efficiency and thoroughness of work processes, reduces the risk of error and lost time, and maximizes product quality control.
Our work environment is fully secure, and we guarantee our clients the utmost confidentiality on all projects. We apply strict rules to protect confidential information, copyrights and intellectual property.
City·Zen
City•Zen, whose intellectual property is owned by Side City, is a tool used to create 3D characters and is compatible with Autodesk Maya and 3ds Studio Max applications.
There are two reasons for developing our own character-modeling tool. First, we wanted to ensure that the characters we create accurately reflect human anatomy and thus are highly realistic for HD production purposes. We also require that the basic structure of the 3D meshing respond consistently to animation deformations, regardless of the proposed design. The multiple features of this tool proved to be so effective that we recorded a significant increase in productivity.
The existing models already in inventory, which were added to the bank as the projects progressed, provide us with infinite possibilities, including quickly producing characters, from the most realistic to the most fantastic. Over 100 facial expressions and phonemes are automatically integrated into the new model to accelerate production and guarantee the viability of the work.
The module used to construct the teeth and tongue enables us to add and fully animate the inside of the mouth according to different styles, from cartoon to the most realistic.
The automatic UV maps and textures module instantly applies textures to the entire character.
With the non-symmetry module, we can adjust the facial morphology for greater realism.
The module for building the skeleton and assigning joint points applies the deformation structure to the new model. This automatically determines the right proportion and proper positioning of joints. The general distribution of points is also applied automatically.
The points-distribution correction module correctly assigns the model envelope to obtain the right deformations during joint movement.
Hair and clothing are built by unit, depending on the use (or non-use) of clothing and hair simulations, and according to the Clothes or Hair technique used. Hair and clothing are nonetheless stored in a bank for re-use.
City•Zen speeds up character motion work. Since the models are built from a similar base, the animators have the same flexibility. Whether they are intended for gaming or HD projects, our characters always have the same quality, regardless of resolution.
City Suite
City Suite consists of a variety of tools developed to meet specific needs encountered during projects. They aim to boost efficiency and most often involve applications that simplify the work of graphic artists, whether it be performing repetitive tasks or adding features to our applications or production software.
Some of these more highly advanced applications come to be considered stand-alone software when all of their features enable a production project to be carried out from beginning to end.
Slotbuilder is our integration software for games and our graphic engine. Developed entirely by our engineers, it is specially designed to program casino-type games, such as slot machines, bonus and progressive screens.
With its open architecture and modular design, we can integrate our games into our clients’ platforms by integrating them into the clients’ technologies, both land-based and online. Similarly to all game engines, Slotbuilder is constantly evolving. Even though it is a complete tool in its own right, new features are constantly being added to it. It enables complex bonuses to be integrated by simply adding new principles and patents.
This software is excellent for prototyping, integrating graphics and cloning games. It offers the possibility of generating executables for demonstration purposes at any time, regardless of the project’s progress. Slotbuilder’s intelligent features are intuitive and easy to use, and provide us with the advantage of being able to program games extremely quickly.
Slotbuilder easily manages:
Multiple screen formats as well as different image resolutions;
Games on multiple screens, including progressive screens;
Changes in the number of symbols, their features and the amount of their associated winnings;
The number of winning line combinations, static and animated;
Multiple names;
