Applications
Side City is a digital production environment with multidisciplinary expertise and an approach as unique as its location in historic Old Montreal. The place where creations come to life and are marketed - the working conditions and quality of life - are all vital to the excellence of our services.
Our production teams are outstanding professionals who work in constant synergy. They unite rapid execution with meticulous attention to detail to meet the company’s high standards of quality. Our specialists are recruited according to a painstaking selection process. To ensure continued synergy and a multidisciplinary approach, we hire only those most likely to integrate well with our existing teams.
Working at Side City studios is widely considered a privilege. Our artists are known as the best, as are their sophisticated creations. All combine artistic talent with technical prowess in their varied fields: design, scripting, illustration, graphics, 3D, editing and animation. These same essential qualities distinguish our project managers, coordinators, team leaders, artistic and technical directors, programmers and integrators.
Mission
Our approach to work is based on two strengths: First, we maintain close relationships with our clients, which has fostered loyalty. The method is foolproof: to maintain our clients’ trust in us, we provide them with quality productions that meet their expectations on all counts. But the best proof of the success of our approach is the reaction - Wow! - to our presentations and our seamless processes to complete a production. Our clients can focus on their own tasks because they know they are supported by a highly motivated team.
Second, we make full use of our knowledge and experience by combining our expertise in 3D, video games, HD production and new media. We both embrace advances in technology that could benefit various sectors of the industry, and capitalize on our curiosity and passion to discover new fields of application. This is what we refer to as our technological creativity. The more we work closely on projects with our partner clients, the more we jointly develop new fields of expertise that improve and broaden our range of services.
This partnership with clients has enabled us to break into a variety of markets:
Games of chance for lottery corporations and casinos
High-definition (HD) interactive video and television production
Visual scenography
Digital cinema
Digital signage
Video games on console, PC and online
Games and applications for the iPhone

Methodology
Our production methodology is based on many years of experience, from witch we developed reliable and flexible work processes. Ongoing advances in technology require that we frequently adjust our work processes and spur new needs for our clients to create new products. We adapt quickly to meet their needs and offer them solutions.
We are fully aware of the advantages of having our own management tools to keep pace with advances in technology. Our production processes are managed entirely with software created and maintained by our developers.
Integration tools simplify our artists’ work by minimizing repetitive actions and errors, freeing them to focus on the creative.
Management tools enable more consistent production monitoring on several levels: planning, job descriptions and assignments, deadlines, work progress, scripting and technical editing of projects, project management and validation. Since all communication and information is collected in one location, it can easily be accessed by our clients at any time. Access is fully secured using personal accounts and permissions.
Production follow-up takes place in real time. A product is therefore monitored several times a day, from inception to completion, from its smallest components from validation and delivery. This increases the efficiency and thoroughness of work processes, reduces the risk of error and lost time, and maximizes product quality control.
Our work environment is fully secure, and we guarantee our clients the utmost confidentiality on all projects. We apply strict rules to protect confidential information, copyrights and intellectual property.
City·Zen
City•Zen, the intellectual property of Side City, is a tool used to create 3D characters and is compatible with Autodesk Maya and 3ds Studio Max software.
There were two reasons for developing our own character-modeling tool. First, we wanted to ensure that the characters we create accurately reflect human anatomy and are highly realistic for HD production purposes. We also required that the basic structure of 3D meshing respond consistently to animation deformations, regardless of the proposed design. The multiple functionalities of this tool proved to be so effective that we achieved a significant increase in productivity.
The models already in inventory, which were added to the bank as projects progressed, provide us with infinite possibilities, including quickly producing characters, from the most realistic to the most fantastic. Over 100 facial expressions and phonemes are automatically integrated into the new model, which accelerates production and guarantees the viability of the work.
The module used to construct the teeth and tongue enables us to add and fully animate the inside of the mouth according to different styles, from cartoon to the most realistic.
The automatic UV maps and textures module instantly applies textures to the entire character.
With the non-symmetry module, we can adjust the facial morphology for greater realism.
The module for building the skeleton and assigning joint points applies the deformation structure to the new model. This automatically determines the right proportion and proper positioning of joints. The general distribution of points is also applied automatically.
The points-distribution correction module correctly assigns the model envelope to obtain the right deformations during joint movement.
Clothing and hair are built by unit, depending on the use (or non-use) of clothing and hair simulations, or according to the Clothes or Hair technique used. Hair and clothing are stored in a bank for re-use.
City•Zen speeds up character motion work. Since the models are built from a similar base, the animators always have the same latitude and flexibility. Whether they are intended for gaming or HD projects, and regardless of resolution, our characters are always of the same high quality.
City Suite
City Suite consists of a variety of tools developed to meet specific needs encountered during projects. They increase efficiency and are typically applications that simplify the work of graphic artists, whether performing repetitive tasks or adding functionalities to our applications or production software.
Some of these more highly advanced applications develop into stand-alone software when their many functionalities enable a production project to be carried out from beginning to end.
Simul
This mathematical simulation and statistical compilation software compiles statistics on a large number of slot machine parts.
Glitterator and Particulator
These applications are designed to add light particle effects to 3D animation scenes during post-processing. They can also generate original and exclusive casino-type special effects, the magic touch to our productions. Our clients can take advantage of their own graphic signature by having specially designed effects added to their animations.
Estuary3D
This tool enables DEM (digital elevation model) topographic data to be converted into high-resolution 3D mesh for modeling realistic decor in the production of 3D motion graphics.
BgRemover
This tool removes the background from a series of animated images to easily create color key images and optimize anti-aliasing of these cropped images.
SequencesCropper
This tool reduces the weight of files to be integrated by automatically reframing a sequence of images containing a color key so that it contains the smallest rectangle possible.
SequencesRenamer
This tool facilitates reworking the nomenclature of image sequences to meet required standards.
SequencesResizer
This tool resizes the image sequences for a project according to the various product and platform standards.
FontVerif
This tool extracts the fonts used in Photoshop files and efficiently groups all of the fonts used in a given project.
FontCutter
This tool generates all of the characters of a game's usable font using a PNG file containing the images and design of these characters. This operation makes it possible to create our own font designs for integration into the character generator in our game engine.
Looper
This application is used to view a selected part of an image sequence in a loop. For example, it can be used to test loops within an animation without having to edit it.
FontDownload
This application enables all public domain fonts to be downloaded as a unit from specialized websites. We also use it for our image banks.
Slotbuilder
Slotbuilder is games our integration software and our graphic engine. Developed entirely by our engineers, it was specially designed to program casino-type games, such as slot machines, bonus and progressive screens.
With its open architecture and modular design, we can integrate our games into our clients’ platforms by integrating them into the clients’ technologies, both land-based and online. As with all game engines, Slotbuilder is constantly evolving. Even though it is a complete tool in its own right, new features are constantly being added to it. It enables complex bonuses to be integrated by simply adding new principles and patents.
This software is excellent for prototyping, integrating graphics and cloning games. It makes it possible to generate executables for demonstration purposes at any time, regardless of the project’s progress. Intuitive and easy to use, Slotbuilder’s intelligent functionalities give us the advantage of extreme speed in programming games.
